Project StarBeam^TM (PSB) draws together elements from space technology, science, and culture to leave a legacy across interstellar space and deep time. As an artistic, cultural, and educational project we encourage the best aspects of humanity in the present.

PSB Vision

We are part of a future full of curiosity about the universe – hailing frequencies open with a message of universal friendship. Our METI (Messaging Extra –Terrestrial Intelligence) community represents and encourages humanity. This includes a commitment to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) education.

PSB Mission

We democratize METI by serving as an interstellar voice for all. Our positive message of friendship is genuine and not limited by government or academic elites. Through building community, STEAM education, development of trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI), and our cultural database, we inspire innovators that our civilization needs.

PSB Values

To communicate with potential ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence (ETI) we must examine our values and ethics in detail. Our work must be a genuine collaboration across all terrestrial cultures and be forward looking – thus we begin with access for all and end with innovation. Developing our primer, databases, curation system, and digital tools with an ethics first approach also allows us to shepard the development of trustworthy artificial intelligence. It is through positive values that our culture, human and possibly machine, will be worthy of contact by ETI.

PSB Operations

Our project curates and structures what will be a large dataset. Transmissions into deep space must be optimized to use signal bandwidth as efficiently as possible. As our transmission technology and infrastructure improves we will be able to send more data and send it farther. However, there is great value in curating the sum of human knowledge.

In parallel with deep space operations, we will be creating a training dataset for artificial intelligence that humans can trust. Our evolving tools and software for METI also serve us well in this “deep trust” development. Along the way we create educational resources, again from our curated dataset and tools. When the time is right, our work will be stored on holographic memory crystals and distributed – waiting as a legacy for a billion years of descendants. These archives will be a legacy in “deep time”. So we have our motto: Space, Science, Legacy.

SAFERR Ethics

METI is both deeply meaningful and controversial to many. The very fate of humanity and our place in the universe are potentially at stake. Our SAFERR (Signatures, Assistance, Friends, Explorers, Random, Risk) analysis indicates that curating and sending a positive message to the stars are beneficial actions we must take while there is time.

PSB Comms Ethos

The central focus of Project StarBeam^TM is communications (comms) – deep space transmission, education, and legacy archives for the far future. We will be communicating with strange new worlds, new life, and new civilizations. Our message must fairly represent all intelligent beings. To achieve this we have established a comms ethos. It has social (CUP), scientific (REG), and community (MOD) components that work as a self-test:
